"Fingers" or "Witch's Fingers" cookies are a popular Halloween treat with countless variations in both appearance and dough. I used a classic shortbread dough as the base, but feel free to put your own spin on it — adding almond flour, citrus zest, or spices like cinnamon would be absolutely wonderful. Kids go crazy for these; my daughter certainly did!
I got 36 cookies out of this recipe, enough for two baking sheets.
P. S. I also have another Halloween cookie recipe — Cottage Cheese "Bones" Cookies.
Ingredients:
- 400 g flour
- 150 g butter
- 120 g powdered sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder (level)
- pinch of salt
- Also:
- almonds (~18 pieces)
- jam
Place the softened butter, powdered sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt in a bowl.
Beat until smooth.
Add the egg and beat until combined.
Add the flour mixed with the baking powder. Knead into a dough.
Shape the dough into a ball and refrigerate for 30–60 minutes.
Pour boiling water over the almonds twice, then peel off the skins.
Slice each almond in half lengthwise.
Divide the dough into 12 pieces and roll each piece into a log about 25 cm long.
Cut each log into three pieces.
Press an almond half into one end of each piece.
Shape each piece to look like a finger and use the dull side of a knife to score knuckle lines.
If you like, you can dip some of the fingertip ends in melted chocolate before pressing in the almond.
Here's how the finished "fingers" look.
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet and, ideally, chill in the refrigerator for a couple of hours or even overnight. This helps the cookies hold their shape during baking and prevents them from spreading — but you can also bake them right away.
Bake in an oven preheated to 200°C for 7–12 minutes, or adjust based on your oven.
For extra realism, dip the ends in berry jam — cherry jam works great.
Witch's Fingers Cookies are the perfect themed treat for Halloween!
